While gambling disorder can be as challenging as any addiction to overcome, treatment is available — and it works. Help is available for both problem gamblers as well as concerned others. This section details some helpful resources, including treatments, support groups and other actions that gamblers or concerned others can take.
SELF ASSESSMENT
Are you concerned that your gambling is more a problem behavior rather than a fun form of entertainment? If you answer yes to any of the following questions, you may want to talk with someone or review some of the resources we’ve provided on our site. This isn’t about judgment. It’s about checking in with yourself to see if your current gambling behavior may be creating more risk than you can afford to take.
- During the past 12 months, have you become restless, irritable or anxious when trying to stop/cut down on gambling?
- During the past 12 months, have you tried to keep your family or friends from knowing how much you gambled?
- During the past 12 months, did you have such financial trouble as a result of your gambling that you had to get help with living expenses from family, friends or welfare?
There are many resources available for individuals with gambling problems and their families. Whether it’s Gambler’s Anonymous or a treatment counselor, each are available to meet you where you are without judgment. Treatment for gambling addiction works.

Working your recovery program is hard. To help assist those who may feel tempted to gamble online or visit a casino or card room, there are a few tools that may be helpful. None are foolproof, but if you are committed to your recovery, these tools may help.
GAMBAN – a voluntary, self-exclusion tool for online gambling sites.
Given that many gamblers may be moving online, especially during COVID-19 times, MNAPG is offering individual subscriptions for an online self-exclusion tool called Gamban. This tool enables the gambler to block tens of thousands of online gambling sites on all devices. MNAPG has purchased one-year subscriptions that can block up to 15 devices in one household. If you are interested, please email sstucker@mnapg.org and a link will be provided to set up the account.
VOLUNTARY SELF-EXCLUSION FROM LAND-BASED CASINOS and CARDROOMS
In Minnesota, anyone interested in self-exclusion for a fixed time (six months, one year, three years, lifetime, etc.) from either a casino or card room may do so by signing a voluntary agreement with each separate facility. By signing this contract, you are agreeing not to enter the premises for a specified time and the casino/card room will cease to send promotional materials to your mailing address. If you should break the agreement during the specified time, the operator has the right to charge you with trespassing and/or if you should win a jackpot of $1,200 or more, you will not receive it.
TRUE LINK
TrueLink is a debit card that allows you or a family member to control exactly how much money can be spent, and on exactly what items or activities.
